Hollow Board Precautions hero

Hollow board. Air inside.

Precautions for hollow boards with Gore-Tex vents. Allow time for internal pressure to equalize before use. Never seal the board in airtight bags or compartments.

Do not let board get hot.

Rapid temperature changes, such as placing a hot board into cold water, can cause internal vacuum or overpressure.

Pros of Using Gore-Tex Vents in Watersports.

1. Pressure Equalization (Breathability)
– Allows air to pass through while preventing water ingress.
– Reduces risk of pressure build-up and delamination in boards due to thermal expansion, especially in hot environments.

2. Waterproof & Salt-Resistant
– Microporous membrane structure blocks water and salt, which helps protect internal components and construction layers.

3. Prevents Mold/Mildew Build-Up
– By allowing internal moisture vapor to escape (vapor permeability), it helps reduce internal condensation and mold growth.

4. Durability
– Gore’s expanded PTFE membrane is known for being chemically and UV resistant, suitable for harsh marine environments.

5. Maintenance-Free (Passive System)
– No need to open or close it manually—unlike screw vents that can be forgotten or misused.

Cons of Using Gore-Tex Vents in Watersports.

1. Cost
– More expensive than manual or simpler vent systems. This adds to the product BOM.

2. Risk of Membrane Contamination or Clogging
– Fine sand, oils, or waxes can clog the micropores over time, reducing performance.

3. Durability under Impact or Abuse
– If installed in exposed locations, it can be damaged by impacts or abrasion (e.g., surfboard deck or nose).

4. Limited Airflow Capacity
– The passive airflow rate might not be enough for large, air-filled volumes under rapid temperature changes (e.g., rapid sun exposure).

5. Installation Sensitivity
– Must be properly sealed and positioned to ensure function and avoid leaks. Improper install can negate its benefits.
